NHLA Welcomes 2023 Summer Interns

Summer brings warm weather and a new batch of interns to New Hampshire Legal Assistance. Get to know Arya, Andrew, and Katie as they begin their internships with NHLA and work with our staff over the next three months.

Andrew Allard just completed his first year at the University of Virginia School of Law. A native of Exeter, he is already familiar with legal aid in New Hampshire after volunteering with 603 Legal Aid during his winter break.

“I shadowed the staff at 603 Legal Aid, particularly housing paralegal Steve McGilvary,” he said. “Helping out at an eviction clinic is when I met people from NHLA.”

Andrew, who will be based in Manchester, looks forward to doing more housing work with clients during his internship as an EJA Summer Fellow, supported by Equal Justice America. Equal Justice America is a non-profit organization and a national leader in providing opportunities for law students to work with organizations that deliver civil legal services to those most in need. Through its work, EJA enables future lawyers to meet the urgent need for pro bono assistance for our most vulnerable citizens.

Arya Novinbakht is a rising 3L at the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law in Concord. He worked with the Disability Rights Center – NH last summer, and will be based in NHLA’s Concord office. Arya is interested in getting involved in housing work, immigration law, and the Justice in Aging Project.

“My father came from Iran to the US as a college student and stayed in the US because of the political revolution happening in Iran while he was attending school in the US,” he said. “So that is why I am interested in learning more about legal protections for immigrants. I also strongly believe that housing is a right and is crucial to maintaining stability in other areas of a person’s life.”

Katie Taylor is a rising 2L at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, OH working on a dual JD and master’s degree in social work. She will be spending her summer in NHLA’s Claremont office.

Katie plans to use her location in Claremont to immerse herself in the medical-legal partnership (MLP) NHLA conducts with Dartmouth Health.

“The MLP is what drew me to this internship opportunity,” she said. “I’m fascinated by the intersection of legal and social services, and the MLP is like a one-stop shop for people in need. I look forward to helping people feel supported from a variety of angles.”
